Timothy McCall, MD is a board-certified physician specializing in internal medicine, and the author of two critically-acclaimed books, Examining Your Doctor: A Patient's Guide to Avoiding Harmful Medical Care (Citadel Press) and the bestselling Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing (Bantam), which has sold more than 100,000 copies. He is co-editor of just released medical textbook on yoga therapy, the first of its kind, The Principles and Practice of Yoga in Health Care (Handspring Publishing).
Timothy is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in psychology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he also attended medical school. After completing residency training in primary care internal medicine, he practiced medicine for more than 10 years in the Boston area before devoting himself to investigating the scientific bases of yoga and yoga therapy. He had already begun his writing and medical vetting career during the time he practiced medicine. Until recently, he was the Co-Director of a yoga therapy center, The Simply Yoga Institute for Yoga Therapy and Holistic Health, in Summit, New Jersey, near Manhattan. He is the Founder/Director of Yoga As Medicine Seminars and Teacher Trainings, and teaches worldwide. Timothy's articles have appeared in dozens of publications, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, the Los Angeles Times, the Nation, Redbook (where he was a contributing editor), The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Boston Globe. His column appeared monthly in the newsletter Bottom Line Health from 1995 to 2003. From 1996-2001, his medical commentaries were featured on the public radio program Marketplace. He has been a guest on numerous national radio and television programs, including two appearances on The Today Show. Since 2002, Timothy has been the medical editor of Yoga Journal, and is a member of the editorial board of The International Journal of Yoga Therapy. He has served as a peer-reviewer for both the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA. In 2004-2005, he was a scholar-in-residence at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, MA. He has lectured on the science of yoga at the National Institutes of Health and given numerous workshops and keynote addresses at conferences sponsored by Yoga Journal, the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and The Smithsonian Institution.
